Last week our team had a fantastic time attending the Society of Personnel & Development Scotland (SPDS) annual conference on the 7th and 8th of November. The theme throughout the event was to ‘Embrace the Unexpected’ helping us to harness our own resourcefulness, stretch our potential, increase our resilience and confidence.
Some of these talks included: Colin Gregor talking about transition (who later put us through our paces in a boot camp), Clyde & Co talking about avoiding nasty surprises, and Leatham Green from the PPMA talking about dreaming big and embracing the journey.
We have combined some photos from the event into a video below:
Matrix SCM a Neutral Vendor Managed Service in Scotland:
A ‘true’ Neutral Vendor Managed Service is an unbiased provider of temporary staff, instead of fulfilling roles directly, Matrix SCM manages supply chains of large agencies and local Scottish SME’s giving them fair access to opportunities on a level playing field.
This diverse supply chain drives fulfilment rates of 99.6%, all within our Technology platform that will provide complete visibility throughout the process and ensure all staff are 100% compliant before starting.
Conducting Research into Scottish Council’s Pain Points in Recruitment Processes:
In 2018 at the Society of Personnel & Development Scotland’s (SPDS) annual conference, we ran research exploring what pain points Scottish Councils are experiencing across their recruitment processes. Ahead of the 2019 conference, we decided to run the same research again, allowing us to run an annual comparison to see how the market has changed over the course of a year.

Analysing the results from the research:
Over the last two years Talent Shortages have been the standout pain point, with 82% of Councils surveyed listing it as a problem in 2018, and 79% respectively in 2019. Diving into this further, from our face to face conversations throughout the conference the problem seems to be with Pay rates and competition for labour with the private sector.
Increase Pay Rates without increasing costs:
We brought together our team to discuss the results and potential solutions. An interesting insight that our team spoke about was that as a Neutral Vendor Managed Service provider, Matrix SCM reduce temporary staffing costs by 11%. To help drive Talent to Scottish Councils, the savings made from recruitment costs could potentially be re-invested into pay rates. Helping widen the pool of talent available and entice more workers to Councils over the private sector.
